Photography Insights | October 2024

Hey Reader,

It’s that time of year again when I find myself wondering, “How is it already…?” But here we are — October is upon us, and there’s a lot happening this month! To ensure you don’t miss any of the photography news I have to share, you’ll receive two newsletters this month.

In this edition, we’re diving into the first answer in my Ask Me Anything series, which addresses a common issue: syncing your Photoshop edits with your Lightroom catalog. Plus, don’t miss Out of Chicago's free webinar this Friday! Be sure to check out the 5DayDeal, returning with special pricing for the first five days of the sale. And last but certainly not least, I would love to hear your nominations for this year's list of Best Gifts for Nature Photographers.

Now, I’m off to photograph some fall foliage up north. Wish me luck!

Happy photographing,
Chrissy

Welcome to the Lightroom & Photoshop Ask Me Anything (AMA) series! Today, we tackle a common issue: how to move photos seamlessly between Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. If you’ve ever struggled with your edits not appearing back in Lightroom, you’re not alone! In this video and article, I’ll share the best practices to ensure your images sync perfectly between the two programs.

P.S. If you have a burning Lightroom and Photoshop question
or specific topics you'd like me to cover in future blog posts or
newsletters, now's your chance to
ask your question here.

Looking for a burst of creative inspiration? Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity!

Although I’ll be on assignment and won’t be able to join my fellow instructors for this webinar, I highly recommend tuning in. The talented team at the Out of Chicago Botanic Photography Conference will share their insights and innovative techniques to help you think more creatively in landscape, garden, macro, and small-scene photography.

The 5DayDeal Photography Bundle is back, and this time it’s celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special 10-day sale. While this bundle isn’t for everyone, it’s an excellent opportunity if you’re seeking a smorgasbord of photographic inspiration. Plus, a portion of each sale goes to charity! Here are some standout items in the main bundle:

Mark Denny's "Ultimate Lightroom Colors Course" is my top pick. Mark is a fantastic teacher and a friend. Color is difficult to master in landscape photography - we want vibrant and realistic colors, but not over the top. This course could really help you nail that balance.

Josh Snow's course "Burn Baby, Burn" offers a comprehensive guide to understanding and mastering dodge and burn techniques in Photoshop through a start-to-finish tutorial. This method helps you guide the viewer’s eye through the photograph.

Frank Doorhof's "Did You Know? Adobe Lightroom" caught my attention! I'm always up for the challenge to see if I really know all the tips shared in this course.

Plus, there are many additional items that may pique your curiosity, like From Still to Motion, which will help you start working with video from Laura Froese.

The 5DayDeal offers four different bundles to choose from, with the lowest prices available only for the first 5 days. Afterward, prices increase for upgrades on the bundles.

  • Main Bundle (16 products, worth $1,000+): $98
  • Pro Bundle (26 products, worth $2,000+): $137 ($98 + $39)
  • Charity Bundle (35 products, worth $3,000+): $166 ($98 + $39 + $29)
  • Complete Charity Bundle (43 products, worth $3,700+): $166

If you’re ready to indulge in this all-you-can-eat buffet, be sure to fill your plate
before October 6, 2024, at noon PT to get the best deal!

Even if this bundle isn't your thing, it’s worth checking out and entering their free giveaway for a chance to win some serious photo gear.

Last year, we hosted a fantastic giveaway featuring items from my list of 2023's Best Gifts for Nature Photographers. Before I finalize this year's list, I want to hear from you!

What's a favorite piece of gear, photography book, educational resource, travel item, or photography-related gem? Your insights will help me craft a stellar gift guide and giveaway for next month.

Timing is crucial for capturing peak fall foliage, and understanding the factors that influence it can give landscape photographers a significant advantage. While shorter days initiate the color change, other elements impact its timing and intensity.

Latitude plays a pivotal role; northern areas typically peak earlier than southern regions. In the Northeast U.S., color progression generally moves from north to south, starting in mid-September and lasting through October.

Weather conditions also affect color vibrancy and duration. A series of warm, sunny days followed by cool, crisp nights produces the most vibrant hues. Conversely, early frost or heavy rain can result in premature leaf drop.

Light, rainfall, and temperature all contribute to the intensity and duration of fall color. If you're planning a photography trip, timing it based on daylight hours is your best bet. As nights grow longer, the likelihood of witnessing peak colors increases.

By combining this knowledge with local foliage reports and the insights on tree species from our September nugget, you can maximize your chances of being in the right place at the right time to capture autumn's most spectacular displays.

Hey Reader, How has your photography been shaping up this season? November turned my world upside down—but in the best way possible! My husband and I welcomed a little girl into our family. She arrived a few weeks early, so last month's photography plans had to pause as we focused on family. But good news! I’ve caught up on enough sleep this past week to finish curating this year’s list of Best Gifts for Nature Photographers. And guess what? We're still doing the giveaway, though we've...

Hey Reader, I hope you are enjoying the start of autumn! I haven't been able to photograph much the past two months so I'm looking forward to grabbing my camera with cooler temperatures, later sunrises, and the kaleidoscope of colors that are coming our way. Most of my photography time focused on finishing a big commercial project in the healthcare industry. It was exciting and daunting because it tested my knowledge and the technical limits of upscaling photos to sizes I never printed...

Hey Reader, The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. We’re still unpacking boxes in the new place, but I’ve managed to get my computer up and running on the desk in my office, so we’re functional. If you’ve sent me an email, know that a reply is coming—soon, I hope! Thanks so much for your patience. I also want to give a big thank you to everyone who participated in last month’s poll about newsletter content. Over 65% of you voted for the monthly variety pack, with Lightroom and Photoshop...
