Photography Insights | February 2023

Published about 1 year ago • 3 min read

Hey Reader,

I'm still not sure if I have recovered from Out of Chicago LIVE! 2023. I smiled and laughed so much with my favorite humans and photographers that my face still hurts. Since everyone is out and about in the world once again, we weren't sure there was still a need for online conferences. Looking back, I can't believe it was even a question.

Online conferences are a convergence of photographers to learn, inspire, and connect. That last point about connection became very clear to me as the weekend progressed. When you put yourself out there, it's a chance to catch up with old friends and meet new people who share your passion. And in a craft that is often a solo experience, it's important to have that community support.

We cannot physically be in the same places at the same time, even though it feels like that sometimes for events like Firefall at Yosemite or autumn in Caddo Lake. Plus, I'm pretty sure Mother Nature wouldn't enjoy that either. However, an online conference is my chance to see and reconnect with so many photographers I've met along the way. That's my long way of saying, if you see an online event that piques your interest, take the jump. It can be so much more than streaming videos.

Here in the southern United States, Father Frost has left for the season. The daffodils and the eastern redbuds are blooming and the aroma of spring is upon us. My fingers are crossed this shift helps prepare me for the heat of next month's visit to the Desert Botanical Garden. But until then, I hope you enjoy this month's articles and find some time to spend with your camera.

Cheers,
Chrissy

This month's tutorial is all about Lightroom presets. I walk through everything Lightroom considers a preset, how I use presets with my photography, and the one exception when you should check that infamous "store Lightroom presets with catalog" box.

I've always enjoyed hearing the story behind an artist's image so I figure it's time to share a few of mine. Discover my inner thoughts on the message I wanted to create, how I approached my goal in the field, and my post-processing steps to create the final photo.

Hey Reader, I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. This autumn season has carried me on a series of travel adventures through enchanting forest trails. Since my last newsletter, I've returned to explore the Canadian Rockies and their golden larches. I was lucky enough to wake up a few mornings with the landscape blanketed in fresh snow. Next, I journeyed over to Pennsylvania and spent some quality time with family while attempting to balance that time photographing this year's abundant...

Hey Reader! Have you managed to find some time to venture outdoors with your camera lately? Time feels like it's flying, and it's hard to believe we're already in July. Last month, I enjoyed camping with friends and photographing the lightning bugs (that's what I called them growing up) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The experience was a nostalgic reminder of my childhood and watching the fireflies light up the landscape around our house. Being literally surrounded by swirls of...

Hey Reader, I hope you are enjoying the sunshine as we approach the first official day of summer. My exhibition ended yesterday, and I couldn't be happier with the feedback from people who were able to stop in and see the collection. It was my first time having a solo show. While it was a tremendous amount of work, there was a considerable amount of pride and personal fulfillment in seeing all the pieces displayed on the walls. If you haven't printed any of your photos in a while, I encourage...
